I'm not on a crusade to end fanservice (I'm writing in the wrong language if I wanted to achieve that). This site's purpose is to provide a reference to give people an idea before watching an anime whether fanservice will make the anime less enjoyable for them. Everyone's tolerance and tastes are different, and by ranking fanservice content according to somewhat objective standards I hope to enable people to more easily find anime they are likely to enjoy.
Fanservice will actively put me off an anime, but people who write anime reviews on mainstream sites don't usually have the same perspective. Even those who don't enjoy it still often see fanservice as a necessary evil which doesn't detract from the storyline, so it's hard for me to tell from reviews alone whether or not an anime contains what is for me an off-putting level of fanservice.
I know I'm not the only one to find this an obstacle to anime viewing, but the point at which fanservice hits dealbreaker levels is very personal so I also know not everyone will have the same limits as I do. What we need is an objective framework anyone can use to rate an anime and reliably indicate what kind of fanservice it contains so that people can make informed decisions as to where to spend their time and money.
After watching every full length pilot episode of the current anime season airing in Japan, I've put together the following criteria for assessment:
